The Adventurous Seagull

Wednesday 17 August 2016

It was a lovely summers evening, 6.30pm to be exact.  The sun was still shining - an uncommon sight in the City of Aberdeen. My wife, Isabel and myself decided to go for a walk along the beach, taking full advantage of the sun that continued to happily shine down on us. But there was something that caught our eye and stopped us in our tracks.

After walking for a while we stopped to take a rest. We found the perfect bench overlooking Aberdeen harbour. The view was great.  All was peaceful until we spotted a small seagull fast asleep on one of the gigantic ships, which was making its way out to sea. We wondered about the seagull and hoped that when he woke he would find his way home safely.

For days we couldn’t stop thinking about the seagull.  Where did he end up?  Did he wake up before the ship had travelled too far?  Did he make it home safely?  It was this seagull that inspired the book “Tammy the Seagull” This is a children’s book that follows the adventures of Tammy as he soars across the sea off the North coast of Scotland.

I was invited to read “Tammy the Seagull” to 21 pupils at Heathryburn School.  The Deputy Head teacher selected the class of primary 3 to attend and listen to the reading.  The teacher ushered the children into the classroom.  Each child was given a cushion and advised to sit on the floor near the front of the class.

Before the start, if I was nervous, the sheer excitement of the children was palpable and that helped me relax and look forward to reading.  With the marketing team Emma on computer and Andie on camera and sound the reading got underway.  The children sat on their cushions gazing up at the reader enjoying every word of the story.

There was no shortage of questions after the read ...

‘Did Tammy come home safely?’  ‘Where is the sea monster today?’ ‘Who was driving the boat?’ These were just a few questions.  Before they left the classroom Emma gave each child an exclusive poster that she had made.  She had left a space at the base for the poster to be signed by the reader.

The book reading was a success.  I have been invited back to read again in August after the summer holidays.

My wife Isabel and I still to this day wonder what happened to the seagull that fell asleep on the boat. We hope he had an adventure just as magical as Tammy’s.

The story of “Tammy the Seagull” continues to bring joy to many children.
